I was looking for the DVD copies of the first Shake Rattle and Roll (SRR) that I bought from Video 48. Must have misplaced it. I miss the old series whenever I watch mediocre horror flicks. A college professor of mine once said that Philippines has the best collection of night creatures. Listverse recognized this and even published The Top 10 Scariest Filipino Monsters. To quote the author, “I mentioned in a comment in 15 Bogeymen from Around the World that a list could easily be made of just Filipino monsters and mythological creatures.” He’s right.
But ever since the Asian invasion penetrated the global movie market, Filipino scream films changed. Replacing white ladies and monster babies are Lotus Feet and her ilk. There is nothing objectionable with the new wave but it will not hurt if filmmakers revisit our local monsters once in a while. Problem starts when producers come up with the likes of Tiyanaks. In f*ckin’ plural form. There are more episodes from the earlier SRRs in this list because for some reason the newer ones have become comic fanfare.
NUMBER TEN: CLASS PICTURE
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll X
Cast: Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, Jean Garcia, Erich Gonzales, Charles Christianson, Nina Jose, Eda Nolan, Stef Prescott, Prince Stefan, IC Mendoza, Andrea Torres
Year: 2008
Jean Garcia is a revengeful dead nun who kills students in the most gruesome manner. She likes to slash things up. The finale was a monumental disappointment but its horrific atmosphere and use of Catholic school as prime setting makes up for the inadequacies.
NUMBER NINE: LRT
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll VIII
Cast: Manilyn Reynes, Kempee De Leon, Quintin Alianza, Eugene Domingo, Cass Ponti, Empress Schuck, Ehra Madrigal, Mhyco Aquino, Charles Christianson, Sergio Garcia, Dino Imperial, IC Mendoza, Mico Palanca
Year: 2006
Remember this : Robina Gokongwei-Pe has a half-man, half-snake twin brother who lives in Robinsons Galleria terrorizing beautiful women in the mall’s dressing rooms? This episode follows the same route. I guess it is even an homage to that ridiculous urban legend. A monster with exceptional hearing abilities but poor eyesight roams the LRT in search for human flesh and blood. It turned out that it is a son of a powerful person. Love the ending and nostalgic points for placing perennial SRR cast member Manilyn Reynes in the lead.
NUMBER EIGHT: YAYA
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll VIII
Cast: Sheryl Cruz, Iza Calzado, Nash Aguas, Debraliz Valasote, TJ Trinidad, Nene Tamayo, Boom Antonio
Year: 2006
There is another episode of the same title in SRR lore starring Kris Aquino but this version worked better because of Iza Calzado and the amazing Nash Aguas. It revolves around a mischievous kid (Aguas) protecting her baby sister from their new yaya whom she suspects is a voracious aswang. Sincere emotions of Aguas kept the episode from a possible substandard production.
NUMBER SEVEN: ATE
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll III
Cast: Janice de Belen, Gina Alajar, Subas Herrero, Armida Siguion-Reyna, Cris Daluz, Pen Medina, Inday Badiday, Joel Torre, Lucy Quinto
Year: 1991
“Patay na ang ate mo. Hinahanap na ng kanyang katawan ang lupa kaya niya ito kinakain.” Pure awesomeness.
NUMBER SIX: MULTO
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll II
Cast: Janice de Belen, Eric Quizon, Eddie Gutierrez, Isabel Granada, Caridad Sanchez, Rafael Reyes
Year: 1990
Population control councils should show this to students to control unwanted pregnancies – that scene featuring a manic Eddie Gutierrez removing fetus from a distressed Isabel Granada will turn off concupiscent unmarried couples.
NUMBER FIVE: NIEVES
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll X
Cast: Marian Rivera, Diana Zubiri, Robert “Buboy” Villar, Jennica Garcia, Mart Escudero, Luis Alandy, Desiree Del Valle, Marco Alcaraz, Iwa Moto, Mike “Pekto” Nacua, Malou Crisologo
Year: 2008
I never like Marian but I loved her in Nieves. Her title character is the Engkanto Slayer who needs to rescue her beloved husband from the clutches of a vindicative nemesis. It is not a horror film but more of a humorous action-fantasy that benefited from Rivera’s comic panache. There was supposed to a full-length Nieves film but got shelved. Regal Films will do us a huge favor if it offers Nieves instead of a Mano Po flick this coming film fest.
NUMBER FOUR: NANAY
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll III
Cast: Manilyn Reynes, Ai Ai de las Alas, Joey Marquez, Ricardo Cepeda, Vangie Labalan, Candy Pangilinan, Jinky Laurel, Agnes Ventura, Roxanne Silverio, Giselle Sanchez, Richard Arellano, Rick Halal, Marlene Aguilar
Year: 1991
One word: undin.
NUMBER THREE: ASWANG
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll II
Cast: Manilyn Reynes, Ana Roces, Aljon Jimenez, Anjo Yllana, Richard Gomez, Vangie Labalan, Rez Cortez, Benedict Supan
Year: 1990
You got invited for a feast. You discover that you are the main course. Damn.
NUMBER TWO: MANANANGGAL
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll I
Cast: Herbert Bautista, Irma Alegre, Mary Walter, Peewee Quijano, Pen Medina
Year: 1984
One of the greatest jologs debates is which is the scarier manananggal episode: SRR 1 or SRR 4. No doubt the first one remains the best. Irma Alegre scaring the daylights out of Herbert Bautista and Mary Walter in their precarious nipa hut is such a vivid image that I have no doubt it fueled manananggal stories that hogged headlines in the ’90s. Back to the debate: why this one? It is all about the setting. SRR 4 took place in an urban area while SRR 1 in a rural locale. It is easier to kill a self-segmenting viscera sucker in a place where there are more obstacles such as buildings and electrical posts.
NUMBER ONE: PRIDYIDER
Series: Shake Rattle and Roll I
Cast: Janice De Belen, Charito Solis, William Martinez, Lito Gruet, Emily Loren, Mon Alvir
Year: 1984
National artist Ishmael Bernal directed this episode that revolves around a refrigerator that raped Janice De Belen. Enough said.

still my fave is top two – manananggal. i can still recall the lola of herbert bautista saying lumalabas ang mga engkanto at lamang-lupa dahil patay ang Diyos. o di ba? as in forever nakatatak sa utak ko yang linya na yan.

Thanks for the comments and for reading the post!
Shake Rattle & Roll 2 Episode “Aswang” is on top of my list. When horror movies heavily depends on prosthetic make ups and hand made costumes, this episode is a stand out. The Gothic and eerie atmosphere captivates the audience attention. Lastly the cast acting seems to be natural, I think they are truly scared when they shoot this movie.
