Food Trip: Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers

LOL: laughing out loud. DFK: deep French kissing. BRB: be right back. NSA: no strings attached. ATM: at the moment. GTG: got to go. GFE: girl friend experience. The rapid pace of technology ushered in a number of modern slangs, acronyms and initializations. The aforementioned examples were invented to keep up with instant messaging, chats and various 140 character messaging that have kept people connected and distracted. Forget SCUBA because no one will be impressed if you recite its meaning Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. But before the onset of Internet, knowing a number of acronyms is a common bragging right among students. Just like being able to memorize all the provinces in the Philippines and the complete name of our national hero. For some reason, teachers are incline to stage competitive recitations involving these subjects. Of all the acronyms out there, my favorite before is mafia - as in the notorious Italian mob. Morte alla Francia, Italia anela or Death to France, Italy cries. Turns out, historians are discarding this information. So there. However, pop culture has not discarded the appeal of mafia and continues immortalizing it through movies, television series, books and fashion. Thus, Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers is a welcome addition to the homage. Any mafia movie fan knows that a mob film ain’t complete without food scenes. Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. Home cook meals. Fine dining. The complete shebang is there. Check out this scene from Goodfellas. Tucked in an assuming corner in Kamuning, Goodfellas is a cozy nook serving reasonably-priced food (named after famous persons and movies of mafia pop culture) and fine wines (Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz). Specialties are, of course, steaks and burgers but it also serves big plates of fish and chicken. Photos of scenes from famous mob films adorn the walls. Free wi-fi is also available. That is enough offer one cannot refuse.

Short for gamba or leg, it is safe to assume that Gambino means short legs. So Gambino must be a nickname or sorts for someone with short legs. Stop laughing. Gambino also refers to one of the Five Families or that group of Italian-American mafia groups that controlled the Big Apple in the 1930s. The other four are the Genovese, Lucchese, Bonanno and Colombo. Resilient is the best description for this mob family that lasted until the late 1990s. Remember John Gotti? Yeah. He’s part of the Gambinos. In terms of taste, the once powerful mafia group will take pride of their namesake dish or side kick in Goodfellas parlance, as the combination of shrimps, mushrooms and garlic is so delicious. It will fit as an appetizer, a entrée or beer food.  Mama was so taken with it she entered the what-makes-the-sauce-so-good zone as soon as she took her first bite.

The romanticized movie version of the most famous bandit couple has catapulted B and C to pop culture legends. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were one of the most notorious bank robbers during the Great Depression. Here comes the segue: fortunately, this aptly named fish and chips doesn’t rob our money’s worth. Just the right amount of size and seasoning, the fish is not as overpowering as other variation. Yes, I am talking to all food establishments that serve fish and chips swimming in revolting oil. Same goes for the chips. Just one thing: add more servings of chips.

If Mama did not join us, Papa would have ordered burgers. But since she was there, the safest choice is fish. Aside from fish and chips, the other fish dish in the menu is The Freshman - kebab, skewered with heaping of rice pilaf. The texture is perfect. The softness is delightful. It is light but filling. The Freshman? It is crime comic movie starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick.

Angus salpicao rice

I have a menacing Al Pacino framed poster so there is little surprise that I ordered this one. Mob fans will recognize the connection, Carlito’s Way is the Brian De Palma-directed movie starring Pacino and Sean Penn. Two acting virtuosos and one hell of a director, what is not to love? Plus John Leguizamo! The excitement tapered after the hat-and-suspender clad waiter delivered the plateful of Angus salpicao and rice. I love salpicao but I thought the meat cubes are a tad too big but the taste is just fine. The rice are more than enough. Then again, I am not complaining for I ate everything on the plate.

Such an enormous and scrumptious meal deserves a dessert. Cheese cakes are evil little inventions. Femme fatale extraordinaire Mae West advised that in choosing between two evils, try the one you’ve never tried before. I never had Toblerone Cheese Cake and Mama is a chocoholic, making the decision a unanimous one.  I like the this cheesecake because the Toblerone taste does not clobber the over-all taste. Not big fan of the popular chocolate. Is there a relation between Toblerone and mafia? Not sure. But the distinctive chocolate bar is such a bad-a** that it forced a rising politician to step down from office because it was revealed that she bought bars of Toblerone using a taxpayer-funded credit card. It has come to be known as The Toblerone Affair.

What you composed made a ton of sense. But, what about this?
suppose you were to create a awesome post title? I ain’t suggesting your content isn’t good,
but what if you added a title that makes people desire more?
I mean Food Trip: Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers | The Birth
of Damnation is kinda plain. You should glance at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create news titles to get people to open the links. You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to grab people interested about everything’ve got to say.

In my opinion, it could bring your posts a little livelier.
