ITO ANG SABI KO: “Grand visuals can not fool the audience or film fest judges all the time. Billed as a  true narration of Manuel Pangilinan’s grandmother, the film fell short in eliciting emotions despite the “struggles of a woman ahead-of-her-time” promise in the promotions. Being ahead of one’s time does not mean a flirtatious willing victim of men.” RATING: B-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “But I am not bothered that the audience reacted with laughters instead of scream. That I guess is the most appropriate feedback. Harsh but true.” RATING: C-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “The last installment of the successful Taging Ina franchise is not at par with the first but loads better than the last one. (Not counting the comeback movie of Joseph Estrada.) I guess the ridiculousness of the sequel bogged down the chances of a satisfying closure. RATING: B-
  4. SUPER INDAY AND THE GOLDEN BIBE: dapat feature length na Nieves na lang ang ginawa ni Marian kasi mahirap tapatan ang isang Maricel Soriano. ITO ANG SABI KO: “I did watch it and I was like, “Holy crap! That was a waste of time.” Not all of it though because I did laugh at least eight times.” RATING: C-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Putting the I Want to Live There Test to Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote, I realized that I love to crash the Kabisote household but not shack up with Agimat and his ilk. The Kabisotes are fun people and not to mention have fairies in their speed dials. RATING: C+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Depp and Jolie. Jolie and Depp. Hot as individuals but frigid as a tandem. How did this happen? The movie is ridiculous to the point that I started wondering about the make-up brand of Jolie instead of the twists and turns.” RATING: C+
ITO ANG SABI KO: ” Writing is its waterloo and Rogen must learn to delegate this task to another person if a sequel is in the works. I admire his talent but one cannot do it all. ” RATING: C
FEBRUARY
ITO ANG SABI KO: “If the scare tactics manage paltry screams, the laughter kept coming as if their funny bones are being paddled not tickled.” RATING: B-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Pretty much the usual retrieving one’s missing identity plot that most filmmakers try to pass up for a conspiracy thriller, Unknown rose and fell because of its limitations and implausible rationale.” RATING: C+
Taragis. Love ko na si James Franco. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Getting stuck between a rock and a hard place has never been this gripping and literal.” RATING: B-
Hanep. ITO ANG SABI KO: “The tale of a promising ballerina’s descent to madness will bring Oscar gold for Natalie Portman. She did hard work out of a piece of work.” RATING: B-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “So did it stop spinning? Enough. The real debate is whether this if it deserves an Oscar. Deserves to be nominated. That’s for sure. ” RATING: B
Idol. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Props to a boxing picture that has great roles for women, not just one but a whole cast of strong female characters.” RATING: B+
  7. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT: patok talaga ito sa akin. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Had so much fun with this little film that could that I watched it thrice.” RATING: A
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Hooper’s masterpiece has all the ingredients for possible British upset: a movie about someone struggling (stammering) and triumphing (delivering a war speech) for the greater welfare of the people. Then there is the Brit factor. Oscars love to honor Mother England. I have a feeling theUnion Jack shall wave high come Oscar night. RATING: A
ITO ANG SABI KO: “If this film loses, then it has to blame a not-so-strong directorial hand and an on-going British lovefest among Oscar voters. If it wins, then thank a fabulous screenplay and first-rate performances from some of the best citizens of Young Hollywood. There.” RATING: A
  10. TOY STORY 3: dalawang beses kong pinanood at dalawang beses din akong humagulhol. Potek. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Three reasons this movie is nominated: 1) to provide hints that Pixar will once again win best animated picture 2) to express gratitude to a film production that has offered people nothing but the best and 3) to inspire other movie producers to follow the lead of Pixar.” RATING: B+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Hailee Steinfeld personified the same grit as her character as she sparred with respected actors like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. More movies for an astounding talent like her!” RATING: B+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Remember the name Jennifer Lawrence for she is a phenomenal acting force. As the resilient eldest sister fighting for their house and looking for her druggie father, she exhibited a mature performance and carried a movie to a nomination.” RATING: B-
MARCH
Napakapait talaga ng pakiramdam kapag meron kang inaabangang pelikula dahil sobrang solid ang trailer tapos isang malaking basura lamang pala. Oo. Tama. Sucker Punch ang sinasabi ko.
ITO ANG SABI KO: “he not another run-of-the-mill love vignette starring Matt Damon is a welcome respite from a mediocre Valentine movies. There is a sincere sweetness bursting throughout this Philip K. Dick adaptation that is lacking in most romantic movies.” RATING: B
Anong mature-mature?! ITO ANG SABI KO: “Comparing it to a timid 5th place opening in North America, the Twilight-ized take on a classic taleseems to be connecting to the Filipino audience. But is it? The over-all appeal escapes me.” RATING: C
  3. LIMITLESS: lakas ng pelikulang ito. You are a star Mr. Cooper. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Cooper has some solid pair of cajones to take on such a material, not just as an actor but also as executive producer, for his first test as a solo leading man.But the box-office rang loud for him so his decision paid off.” RATING: B+
Kalokohan. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Multi-layering involves a certain level of clevernessthat is absent in this visual feast. Be prepared.” RATING: C
  5. CATCH ME I’M IN LOVE: ang unang pagtatambal ni Sarah at Gerald. ITO ANG SABI KO: ” Sarah, on the other hand, has perfected the bumbling, no-girlfriend-since-birth, blithe girl who transforms the selfish, snobbish rich cutie. She is a rom-com sub-genre on her own. RATING: B-

APRIL

  1. SOURCE CODE: enjoy ako dito. Reminds me of Minority Report. Exciting. Malalim. Kahit na popcorn film. ITO ANG SABI KO: “It is thus refreshing that a film such as Source Code does not insult our remaining intelligence. It is not enough that science-fiction movie has amazing effects and sensational stunts but there has to bean element of  science, even if it is fictional.” RATING: A
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Director Carlos Saldanha captured the crucial elements that makes this movie captivating: the visual (amazing colors), the sound (amazing music), the heart (just amazing).” RATING: A-
Solb. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Original Arthur is a lovable drunkard while Remake Arthur is a childish drunkard with obvious mother issues. The former borders the rehashed poor-little-rich-kid/man-child stories. I am not sure if there is a proper method to make it better.” RATING: C

MAY

ITO ANG SABI KO: “The sets are astounding, especially Asgard. The humor is subtle, almost dry. The actors are good, no annoying over-the-top performances.” RATING: B-
Labo. ITO ANG SABI KO: ” me, the problem is the utilization of formulaic horror staples like creepy kids, third-eyes, self-moving objects, dripping bloods, gusts of winds and loss of electrical power; without putting effort to improve or redefine these elements. It is a sad case of been-there-seen-that.” RATING: C
ITO ANG SABI KO: “I can let go of the melodramatic twists and turns plaguing the movie as I am immune to the soap opera-tization. But it is the ending that had me cringing and fidgeting as it tries to squeeze all available emotions.” RATING: B
ITO ANG SABI KO: So if I felt the set design is the best thing about this movie then it is a sure sign it is terrible. I hope Paul receives better movie offers.” RATING: C
ITO ANG SABI KO: “There in lies the huge rub, Lee and other great kung fu stars are not cookie-cutter action figures but flesh-and-blood heroes. This blueprint is captured in the first movie: a prophecy to fulfill; an old master in search of a student; a band of skillful warriors  defending their turf and pride; a fearsome opponent out for revenge; and a most unlikely hero out to prove himself.” RATING: A-

JUNE

I LOVE YOU JAMES AND MICHAEL! Meron pang ibang pelikula. James! Michael!

  1. X-MEN FIRST CLASS: kasalanan ko ba kung na-inlab ako sa bromance nina Magneto at Professor X?! Hindi. Kasalanan ng Macbender love team. James! Michael! ITO ANG SABI KO: “As the life-altering bullet struck Xavier in his spine, I almost screamed, ‘No! He should not be stuck in a wheelchair. The 1970s is approaching. He and Lehnsherr should be disco-dancing and scoring ladies in shimmering hot pants. Or sharing drinks with the Burtons in Studio 54. The ’60s has not even ended! I am sure Charles got room reservations in Hugh Hefner’s famous mansion. Dead sure.’” RATING: A-
Salamat. Maraming salamat. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Despite some dragging parts and a need for more action sequences, this film is still super for me.” RATING: A-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Something tells me this is a mediocre repeat. I did laugh but still. There is a nagging feeling the movie  is just a repetition. Not even a sequel.” RATING: C+
Lintik. ITO ANG SABI KO: “This is one of the suckiest comic book adaptation I have seen in a long time. I ended up composing the previous sentence fifteen minutes or so before the movie ended.” RATING: C-
  5. THE TREE OF LIFE: napanood mo ba at nalito? Sarap ng feeling. Ma-te-test ang patience mo sa creation scene. ITO ANG SABI KO: “I do not think Malick falls under the run-of-the-mill directors. Some people just do their thing. Some people are huge dicks to impose their vision to us and expect positive reciprocation. Such dicks. Such artistic dicks.” RATING: B+

JULY

  1. TEMPTATION ISLAND: si Chris Martinez na talaga. Akalain mong magugustuhan ko ang remake ng isa sa mga paborito kong pelikula of all-time. ITO ANG SABI KO: “One of the big scenes at the end of the film is the coronation of the model search winner. Dressed in a Celia Rodriguez-inspired ensemble (animal prints and a gigantic turban), Poe strutted like a regal winner. No doubt she is the star.” RATING: B+
  2. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2: bumili na ako ng ticket isang linggo bago pinalabas ang huling installment ng Potter series. Super. Excited. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Elegant. Elegiac. Eternal.  The final instalment in the Potter film franchise feels like aprolonged mourning for a cherished old friend.” RATING: A

AUGUST

A is for August dahil sa magagandang pelikula sa month na ito maliban na lamang sa lintik na Conan the Barbarian. C is for Conan.

  1. THE RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: tumindig talaga ang balahibo ko doon sa isang eksena. ITO ANG SABI KO: “The movie is indeed more than just a planet gone to the apes but an astute social annotation to humans.” RATING: A
  2. ZOMBADINGS 1 PATAYIN SA SHOKOT SI REMINGTON: pinanood ko na sa UP. Pinanood ko pa sa Trinoma. ITO ANG SABI KO: “His transformation fromman to manash is hilarious. The Starstruck alumnus hit all the fabulous notesfrom realizing his shaved armpits, to donning a purple tee and to delivering rapid-fire bekimon language.” RATING: A
ITO ANG SABI KO: “The surprise prompted applause and burst of laughter from moviegoers last night. (I had a strong feeling there is a surprise but I never guess it. So kudos to the filmmakers!)” RATING: A-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “here is no point dissecting this film as this single sentence suffices: Another computer generated-laden remake of a classic cheeseball forging the on-going belief that most filmmakers are suffering from undue brain farts. But that does not mean one cannot ENJOY this junk.” RATING: C+

SEPTEMBER

Nakakaloka! Isang pelikula lang.

ITO ANG SABI KO: “f the packed rafters last night are indications of things to come then Star Cinema has a huge hit in their hands in No Other Woman.” RATING: C+
OCTOBER
  1. THE THREE MUSKETEERS: utang na loob basahin mo na lang ang libro. ITO ANG SABI KO: “The thing that is driving me mad is the fact people will WATCH it and will end up believing this is the real narration of The Three Musketeers.” RATING: C-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “Even the genius that is Vice cannot make it work. (I sincerely hope his follow-up project is a vast improvement from this one because it is so hard to hate Vice. Just like his twin sister Anne Curtis. 2011 IS THEIR YEAR. How can I hate them?)” RATING: B-
NOVEMBER
ITO ANG SABI KO: “After watching the film last night, I was debating whether it was a good one or not. Three things I agreed on: 1) the story is a bit long 2) the ab-wak is both a hit and a miss and 3) Lovi Poe is perfect for the role.” RATING: B
Not that superb but not that bad either. ITO ANG SABI KO: “It is difficult to make a good and original comedy heist film. Tower Heist includes several old shticks and gags as expected. Of course. This is not the first one. But this is certainly one of the better heist comedies to come out of the Bernie Madoff Era.” RATING: B+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “This driver is special…He changed because he felt something different. The driver felt special.” RATING: A+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “The personal resentment is not rooted on the film or the actors but the source of the series, the books. It is not well-written and the values put forth are at best, questionable.” RATING: C-

DECEMBER

Lilia rocks.

  1. WON’T LAST A DAY WITHOUT YOU: Pablo Apostol. Idol. ITO ANG SABI KO: “That said; let us thank the person responsible for casting Joey De Leon because his character Pablo Apostol provided ample shots of goofiness and ‘stig factor to the film. Rock on.” RATING: B+
  2. THE ROAD: ito ang the best horror film ng taon. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Having not seen enough indie horror films of late, I cannot make a proper and general conclusion. But this is the best mainstream horror film of 2011.” RATING: B+
  3. SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION FROM LILIA CUNTAPAY: bihirang-bira kong ilabas ang A+ pero dito parang gusto ko A+++. ITO ANG SABI KO: “Films like this are an indication Philippine Cinema is far from dead. No. It is not dead because LILIA CUNTAPAY is rockin’ it like a mad ghost.” RATING: A+
ITO ANG SABI KO: “The first reason I needed to see this film is James McAvoy. Mmm. Mmm. I know. It was just his voice but still.” RATING: A
  5. NEW YEAR’S EVE: paanong pinapatulan pa ito ng mga tao?! ITO ANG SABI KO: “Oh. Take this test to find out if YOU WILL ENJOY this film.” RATING: C-
ITO ANG SABI KO: “here is nothing more to discuss – Lion King is an A+ film because of its superb animation, impeccable voice acting, inspired narration and a beautiful soundtrack. But more than an achievement in film-making, the Shakespearean-like tale of the residents of Pride Rock is a reminder of greatness.” RATING: A+
  7. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL: nagbabalik si Tom Cruis. Please lang magtino ka na. ITO ANG SABI KO: “ever mind the plot because it is one of the more exciting action films of 2011.” RATING: B
